This week saw Kameron Michaels drop her debut music video for her debut single “Freedom”. Fans have been waiting for this day after her awesome performance on RuPaul’s Drag Race season ten episode, “American”, where the top four had to write, record, and perform their own verse to RuPaul’s song “American”.

Kameron Michaels, real name Dane Young, is best known for being one of two runner-ups on the tenth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She was dubbed as the lip-sync assassin after lip-syncing for her life, four times in a row, sending other queens home, and then she won the first finale lip-sync for the crown, but lost out to Aquaria in the second one. Kameron Michaels released her debut single, titled “Freedom”, on June 17, 2019, and followed that up with this new music video on June 25, 2019.

The song has been written by Dane Young, Nikolai Prange, and Samantha DeRosa whilst it was produced by Nikolai Prange. The music video was directed by Assaad Yacoub, produced by Alex Lampsos, with Brandon Voss acting as executive producer and Geoff George acting as director of photography, whilst Nick Landa & Coralie Jeanquier edited the video. Chancelor Dayne Benson choreographed the number and the dancers that appear in the visual are Tarance Artis, Devinn Harris, Ander Arabolaza, and Dor Raybi. Eagle-eyed viewers will notice a variety of guest stars including Eureka O’Hara, Farrah Moan, Rhea Litre, Dahlia Sin, Kornbread Jete, Dex Rated, Gael Cappelluzzo, Ash Lavacca, Francisco Hernandez, and Miguel Magaña.

What an inspirational music video. Kameron Michaels impresses to no end with this visual, representing the whole of the LGBTQ+ community and spreading confidence to all that watch. First off, the song is an upbeat club number with a brilliant lyrical message behind it, stating that it’s okay to be who you are and there’s a sense of freedom when you stop hiding. Her voice sounds absolutely incredible and really works with the song. This deserves to be a pride anthem, and it should so be added to the pride playlists this year! We also hope that remixes for the track gets dropped soon.

As for the music video, it’s bright and fun during the performance segments, with Kameron Michaels looking incredible in a gold outfit as well as a tie-dye inspired loose tracksuit. Some scenes see her performing alone, others see certain dancers knocking out incredible choreography, at other times Kameron Michaels joins the dancers for a dance sequence, and then there’s the large group of dancers, drag queens, and other guest stars who are all dancing to the song. Intercut throughout are three separate narrative visuals that drive home the message of the song. The first scene shows a young child playing with dolls, who is being bullied by other children. The second visual sees a trans teenager who isn’t happy with being a male. The third scene sees a gay couple holding hands as they walk down the street, while others stare at them. All three clips are extremely important issues in the LGBTQ+ community at the moment, allowing the viewers of the video to really relate to those narrative clips; whilst Kameron Michaels encourages us all to be who we are with her awesome song.

“Freedom” is available to download and stream right now, via Voss Music.
